Welcome to the Future:
Where Dyslexic Brains Thrive

Keynote Speaker: Gordon Sherman, Ph.D. and
Dee Rosenberg

Synopsis: We view dyslexia not as a product of a dysfunctional brain, but as an example of the learning diversity that excels in the real world. Unfortunately, a dysfunctional education system often awaits those who learn differently. Our goal in these integrated talks is to describe the value of cerebrodiversity (our species' collective neural heterogeneity), of which dyslexia is a byproduct, and to challenge conventional assumptions about social and culturally defined disabilities. We seek to encourage those who struggle with dyslexia, provide a context for understanding dyslexia's enigmas, and to explore solutions for success.

Gordon Sherman, Ph.D. is the Executive Director of The Newgrange School and Education Center located in Mercer County, New Jersey. Before joining Newgrange he was Director of the Dyslexia Research Laboratory at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, Massachusetts, and faculty member at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Sherman is a former President of the International Dyslexia Association.

He is the recipient of their Samuel T. Orton Award which is presented annually to a person who has made a dramatic impact in the field of dyslexia.

Dr. Sherman received his Ph.D. in Developmental Psychobiology from the University of Connecticut (Storrs, Connecticut) in 1980 and has over 25 years of research experience related to the development of the brain and the understanding of developmental dyslexia. He is the author and editor of over 80 scientific articles, reviews, and books. Dr. Sherman speaks nationally and internationally to parents, teachers, and scientists about cerebrodiversity, learning differences, brain development, and the enlightened classroom.

Dee Rosenberg, has been the Director of Education at the Newgrange School and Educational Center for the past ten years. She has a Masters in Learning Disabilities from Montclair University and is a certified Learning Disabilities Teacher Consultant. Dee has had over twenty years of classroom experience at both elementary and high school levels, as a regular and special education teacher, and as an educational diagnostician.

She is a certified teacher trainer of Wilson Language Program, Developing Metacognitive Skills, and LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling).

Dee has consulted with many school districts, and she has trained teachers locally and nationally, to improve student achievement through the use of good assessment and research-based literacy programs. She has lectured nationally and internationally about improving literacy and other issues related to special education. Dee is currently the President of the New Jersey Branch of the International Dyslexia Association.

"A Conversation with Al Farb, Producer - Morning Show Sports Talk 790"

Al Farb, a native Houstonian, knew from a very young age that everyone should want to listen to what he wanted to say and discovered that radio was the perfect career to pursue. Al officially started his radio career at the age of 13 in January 2000, when he debuted as a contributing member on “The Johnjay Morning Show” on Houston!s KKBQ-93Q FM. Al attended The Briarwood School in Houston!s Westside, and attributes much of his professional success on his attendance there.

Currently, Al serves as Assistant Program Director for SportsTalk 790 KBME, and Clear Channel Radio Houston, where he has worked since 2005. Al also assists the company!s six stations in commercial production and promotional appearances. Al has a strong dedication to the radio business. Industry professionals say, “Al!s energy and passion for radio are infectious,” and “Al is an invaluable asset to our industry.” Al also owns and operates a small live event/audio production company, Al Farb Productions. In his spare time, Al enjoys giving back to the community by serving as a lifetime member of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo committee volunteer, spending time with family and friends.
